He Oranga Poutama expanded into four new regions including Te Tairawhiti

Te Rūnanganui o Ngāti Porou and Whiti Ora are excited by the Government’s announcement to boost Māori leadership and participation in sport and traditional physical recreation through the expansion of the He Oranga Poutama programme into new areas of Te Tairāwhiti – mai Potikirua ki te Toka a Taiau.

Taking a kaupapa Māori approach will ensure that the programme resonates with our communities, contributes to the revitalisation of traditional activities, and further strengthens Māori well-being.

Te Rūnanganui o Ngāti Porou Chief Executive George Reedy said “The opportunity that He Oranga Poutama creates for the whānau of Ngāti Porou is exciting and connects to our mahi on a wider scale. Nurturing our whānau to enhance their Ngāti Poroutanga in ways that get you physically active and builds connection to whakapapa, hononga and identity will support better health and wellbeing for our people.”

Whiti Ora Chief Executive Stefan Pishief said “Our partnership with Te Runanganui o Ngāti Porou has been evolving over recent years and our trust in each other’s strengths and skills will set the foundation for giving the community the best of ourselves with He Oranga Poutama. Our region has a proud sporting history and is deeply connected to the whenua, taiao and people, but there are many inequities faced by our communities to participate that we will need to address.”

We are excited to be working in partnership with Te Rūnanganui o Ngāti Porou, Sport NZ, and our communities to deliver He Oranga Poutama in our rohe, and build upon some of the great initiatives that are already happening.”

Whiti Ora Wellbeing Initiative

As part of a new wellbeing initiative at Whiti Ora we will be closed for the first week of the school holidays, the most immediate being Saturday 9 July – Sunday 17 July.

To have the impact that we want with our community and to make our vision a reality, ka topa te manu ki te rangi – expanding horizons for an active, healthy, connected Te Tairāwhiti, we need to bring the best of ourselves to mahi each day.

To do this, we need to get the right balance in life, look after staff, reduce burnout and prioritise quality whānau time in-line with our values to ensure that everyone is feeling engaged, refreshed and at their optimum.

He aha te mea nui o te ao
He tangata, he tangata, he tangata

What is the most important thing in the world?
It is the people, it is the people, it is the people

Bookings by external groups for our meeting rooms will be unavailable during this time.

We will respond to phone calls, messages and emails once we’re back on Monday 18 July.

Noho ora mai.
